So a few days ago my niece posted that she would be singing in a concert at Loyola Marymount University and in a follow up post mentioned that her brother would be there playing viola as well. Add to that that it was nearby and free and how could I say no? That is how I found myself in church on a Thursday night listening to liturgical music.
The composers/arrangers, Tony Alonso and Chris de Silva presented an interesting assortment of traditional liturgical music with an occasional bossa nova or samba thrown in and punctuated with anecdotes and backgrounds on the pieces. The arrangements were great, as were the performers. There was not a bad voice in the bunch. My niece, of course was my favorite. The last time I heard her sing it was opera, and tonight was just a reminder that she is comfortable singing in many genres. It was fun to hear my nephew play as well. I didn’t find out about his last concert until it had begun or I would have gone to that one too.
Overall, I’m glad I went to this one but liturgical music is not really my thing and it makes me a little uncomfortable to sit in church. If I didn’t personally know the performers, I’d skip it. If it’s YOUR thing though, you should definitely give Tony Alonso and Chris de Silva a listen.
